Cook’s assistant (or kitchen help)

Description of the function

The cook’s assistant helps the cook who prepares the meals by performing simple tasks to accelerate preparation of the meals.

He must in particular:

  • Make basic preparations for certain dishes or desserts
  • Wash, peel and cut fruits and vegetables
  • Clean, cut and chop meat and fish
  • Weigh and prepare ingredients
  • Monitor cooking of dishes
  • Assist with setting up dishes and platters
  • Distribute supplies and food trays, if required
  • Place leftovers in containers and store food for preservation
  • Clean workstations, cabinets and accessories
  • Receive and store kitchen products
  • Collaborate or carry out kitchen help tasks
  • Handle food or non-food products
  • Prepare raw foodstuffs
  • Package or label food or non-food products
  • Supply the counters, stalls, shelves and displays

Prerequisites

No special experience is required, but some employers prefer candidates with training in kitchen duties (DEP in institutional kitchen)

Compensation

Like any other function working in the restaurant industry, compensation varies according to the experience of the employee, the company’s situation and the job itself. This work sometimes requires working evenings, weekends and holidays. Organization of the work may vary according to the tourist season.
