Busboy (runner)

Description of the function

The busboy (runner) must set up, clean and clear the tables to meet the needs of the establishment and the customers.

He must in particular:

  • Load trays and trolleys to transport dishes and utensils from the kitchen to the dining room and vice versa
  • Clear the table after the customer leaves
  • Wipe the table and replace the tablecloths, placemats and napkins
  • Empty ashtrays
  • Bring dirty dishes to the dishwasher
  • Set the table
  • Replace condiments and other items on the table
  • Refill the supply of water or any other drink available at the counter
  • Monitor supplies and general cleanliness of the public areas

Prerequisites

No special experience is required, but some employers prefer candidates with training in service (DEP in restaurant service) while others require a high school diploma (DES).

Compensation

Like any other function working in the restaurant industry, compensation varies according to the experience of the employee, the company’s situation and the job itself. This work sometimes requires working evenings, weekends and holidays. Organization of the work may vary according to the tourist season.
