Job Summary

The Park Person II position is a versatile role encompassing five distinct functions: General Maintenance, Playground Oversight, Horticulture, Sports Field Management, and Turf Operations. Each function requires specialized skills and expertise. Candidates have the opportunity to be hired individually for one of these roles. In this position, you'll contribute to the care and enhancement of our community's outdoor spaces, ensuring they remain safe, beautiful, and enjoyable.

Whether you're skilled in general maintenance, passionate about playground safety, have a green thumb for horticulture, or excel in sports field and/or turf management, you can play a vital role in maintaining and improving our parks.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to and under the supervision of Parks Person I - Sports, the Parks Person II - Sports assists in carrying out the following activities:

  • Assist in inspection and maintenance of City's outdoor natural, artificial fields / rinks, hard surface and court sport amenities;
  • Assist in installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of minor irrigation repairs;
  • Assist in installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of park furniture;
  • Assist with performing Integrated Pest management, cultural practices and yearly renovations, in line with city standards; fertilize, aerate, overseeding, top-dressing, etc.;
  • Assist with lining of sports fields and grooming of natural and artificial fields;
  • Act as the Parks Person I - Sports in their absence and as appointed;
  • Participate in litter and garbage collection when needed;
  • Provide leadership to team members, training on equipment, policies and standards, record keeping and assist with establishing work plans;
  • Answer inquiries from the public and city staff;
  • Assist with being a liaise including but not limited too:
    • General Contractors
    • Other City Departments
    • Parks Planning
    • Parks Development
    • FPM
  • Assist with set up and take down of community and special events, including delivery of materials and equipment;
  • Maintain equipment and tools regularly;
  • Perform administrative functions such as but not limited to:
    • P-Card reconciliation
    • IFI WO completion
    • ActiveNet
    • SharePoint uploads
  • Perform general carpentry work;
  • Perform winter maintenance as needed; including but not limited to: hand shovelling, plowing, and de-icing;
  • Participate in the Parks on-call program;
  • Participate in the seasonal pruning program;
  • Assist with turf maintenance, hard surface maintenance, and leaf clean-up;
  • Assist with and participating in Goose program;
  • Assist with the Natural Ice Rink Program;
  • Participate in divisional committees.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary College or University program in Horticulture or Turf Management with 3 years experience in Park Operations or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's License.
  • Valid Class "DZ" Ontario Driver's License considered an asset.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR 'C' is required or needs to be obtained prior to employment start date.
  • Ability to operate Microsoft Office programs and relevant City of Mississauga software.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain small and large vehicles and equipment.
  • Comfortable working primarily in parkland with exposure to temperatures, varying weather conditions, and contaminants of various kinds.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 58,942.00 - $ 78,592.00
