Postdoctoral Fellow in Aquatic Toxicology

Purpose

The Postdoctoral Fellow provides a range of services, including assisting with, and conducting research under the lead researchers’ direction at the Quesnel River Research Centre in Likely, BC. This includes working on a number of ongoing and possible research projects, including, but not limited to understanding the effects of climate change on salmon ecosystems and the direct effects of increasing water temperatures and wildfire-contaminated spawning habitat on interior Pacific salmon early life stages, and other duties as needed. The position is part of a large, collaborative research project evaluating flood, fire and increasing temperature risks posed to upper Fraser watershed salmon stocks in a rapidly changing climate. The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow will be to determine the effects of increasing water temperatures and wildfire- contaminated spawning habitat on interior Pacific salmon early life stages. The larger project seeks to define the influences of environmental change on sustaining salmonid populations within Quesnel Lake and large lakes in the region using a multidisciplinary approach that links detailed process measurements with integrated hydrometeorological and physical lake models.

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

Literature searches for the project;

Assisting with experimental design and set up of aquatic toxicology experiments and visual behavior tests;

Handling and sampling fish;

Lab work and analysis of gene expression in fish tissues;

Data entry and analysis; and

Preparation of presentations and manuscripts for co-authorship of project results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the following:

A doctoral degree in Biology, Environmental Science or a related field;

Demonstrated experience in fish biology, molecular biology and/or fish ecotoxicology;

Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills in English;

The ability to work well independently and as part of a team; and

Be highly organized and resourceful.

Salary

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The anticipated annual salary to be paid is $60,000.00.

Normal hours of work will be 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday – Friday.
