Reporting to the Supervisor, Mechanical, the Rail Car Mechanic is an integral team member of the Rocky Mountaineer Operations and Mechanical team. The Rail Car Mechanic will be mainly responsible for the safe inspection, maintenance, and repair of all rail cars and equipment in Rocky Mountaineer's fleet of assets.

This position is deemed Safety Critical and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety critical medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Key Areas of Accountability

• Repair defective interior and exterior rail car components as identified

• Diagnose and service rail car wheel/axle assemblies

• Execute regular equipment inspections

• Inspect and repair couplers, yokes, draft gears and associated components

• Inspect and repair air brake system components and execute any associated tests

• Perform maintenance on tools and equipment used and other duties as assigned by work order

• Troubleshooting diverse equipment types, and supporting cross functional trade defects as needed

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Willingness to participate in personal development company initiatives

Safety

• Comply with Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and all other safety policies, procedures, and rules

• Identify, protect, and report safety hazards to management and OH&S Committee

• Meet or exceed safety and security requirements

• Maintain basic first aid level provided by Rocky Mountaineer

Operations

• Support the successful execution of the Operating Plan

• Support safe movement of rail equipment

• Support operational and equipment availability requirements

• Support 5S Lean methodology to seek continuous improvement efficiencies

• This position may require the ability to train for and perform switching duties

Mechanical

• Able to read, understand, and interpret schematics, manuals and other instructions pertaining to equipment

• Train for the use of equipment and hand tools

• Execute a successful Maintenance Program

• Ensure completion of work orders maintaining brand standards, working collaboratively with team members and contractors

• Execute mechanical and reliability requirements

Qualifications

Education, Certification, Licenses

• Railcar Mechanic or Carman certificate or equivalent (required)

• Welding Qualification is an asset

• High School Diploma

• First Aid Level 1 Certification is an asset

• Valid Driver's License

• Previous Qualification under CROR Operating Rules is an asset

Experience/Skills

• Experience performing maintenance and repair on passenger rail equipment is an asset

• Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operations such as forklifts, cranes, etc.

• Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe small hand tool handling such as grinders, drills, etc.

• Understanding of other trades such as electrical and plumbing is an asset

• Understanding of other trades such as electrical and refrigeration is an asset

• Previous Qualification under CROR Operating Rules is an asset

Work Environment

• May require occasional travel

• Physical demands may require lifting to 80 lbs. on occasion

• Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day

• 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules

• Indoor/outdoor working environment

Wage: $43.42/hour

Schedule: 3 shifts/week, from 8:30pm to 8:30am
