Via Ferrata Shift Lead

The Via Ferrata Shift Lead reports to the Via Ferrata Team Lead, supervising the Via Ferrata Guides and ensuring a unique and entertaining visit for guests to the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort Via Ferrata. The Shift Lead and Guides will be responsible for monitoring and reporting on route conditions, advising on and assisting with repairs, assisting with installations, and ensuring the health and safety of guests while using the Via Ferrata. The Via Ferrata Shift Lead is well-versed in the Mountain Safety program and acts as a first responder to Via Ferrata emergencies, situations, accidents, or any other health or safety concerns.

Accountabilities

· Act as Shift Lead for the Via Ferrata team, managing performance and progressive discipline.

· Assist in delivery of staff training.

· Assist with fiscal responsibilities and scheduling.

· Monitor and report on route and weather conditions and advise on route closures.

· Act as first responder in emergency or health or safety situations and dispatch resources.

· Liaise in emergency situations, communicating with key contacts until situation is resolved.

· Participate in the ongoing development of the Via Ferrata safety, emergency procedure & safety program manuals.

· Assess condition of injured parties, administer first aid treatment and transition to emergency personnel if required.

· Participate or lead in rope evacuation of injured/sick guests utilizing CDFL and or dual rope systems.

· Assist in accident reporting and submission of necessary documentation.

· Ensure all guests adhere to established safety procedures.

· Participate or lead in gondola and lift evacuation.

· Assist the Mountain Safety program as required with risk management and incident response.

· Assist with annual inspections.

· Assist with management and maintenance of guest and guide equipment.

Qualifications

· Current certification in an 80-hour First Aid program, preferably NUOC and PEAK advanced protocols

· SPRAT/IRATA level 1 or higher certification - an asset

· Ability to communicate effectively and multi-task under stress or time pressure

· High school graduate; completion of post-secondary education - an asset

· Previous supervisory experience in a safety, patrol, ropes rescue, or related outdoors role

· Comfort accessing vertical rock environments

· Familiarity with Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and the summer evacuation procedures

· Previous organized rescue training is an asset

· Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation

· Member of Golden and District Search and Rescue - an asset

· Class D fixed line rescue experience - an asset

· Previous guiding experience - an asset

Working Conditions

· Extended periods of exposure to extreme weather conditions on resort (cold, wind, snow, sun, altitude)

· Must be physically able to administer first aid treatment

· Must have physical strength and stamina to negotiate varied and difficult terrain while climbing/scrambling

· Must have physical strength and stamina to engage in search and rescue activities, including navigating on foot through rough terrain and extreme conditions with rescue gear

· Flexible shifts, including weekends, of up to eight hours required
