Description

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. The incumbent is responsible for ordering supplies and making adjustments to menus as necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Food Preparation:

  • Monitor and participate in food preparation to ensure that all food and products are consistently prepared and served according to recipes, portion control, cooking and serving standards.
  • Complete purchases for the daily operations of the Resource Centre, as it pertains to job responsibilities, remaining within budget guidelines. When order is received, ensure goods received match invoice detail before sign-off.
  • Complete daily food pickups as per schedule.
  • Prepare and serve attractive, nutritious meals, according to the prepared menu plans and in accordance with applicable food service and Canada's Food Guide
  • Adapt work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
  • Make use of and decide on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
  • Assist in the constant cleanliness and sanitation of freezers, coolers, fridges, stove and food preparation surfaces.

Program

  • Conduct monthly cooking class for CRC clients (simple techniques they can make quickly and easily i.e. grilled cheese sandwich)
  • Conduct a regular participant-driven community kitchen for CFS clients to find fellowship while planning, cooking and sharing healthy, affordable meals using food donations. The meals are shared with participants to take home to feed themselves and their families.

Menu Planning:

  • Create, develop, and maintain the menu following the Canada Food Guide, under the direction of the CRC Supervisor.
  • Prepare an ongoing list of food supplies needed according to menus.
  • Ensure adherence to the posted menu plans; special dietary concerns of those eating in establishment.

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure that Department of Health and Fire regulations are adhered to in the kitchen and food storage areas.
  • Ensure that daily temperatures are recorded for the refrigerator and freezer; they are up to date for inspection.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all equipment, drawers, and cupboards and clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, and utensils.
  • Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas.
  • Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence.
  • Monitor and maintain kitchen equipment, report any equipment issues to CRC supervisor.
  • Maintain sanitation, hygiene, health and safety standards and safe handling of foods while performing duties.
  • Adhere to fire and health and safety standards pertaining to the kitchen and other areas of the facility.
  • Report to the supervisor new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.

Daily Operations and Facility Management:

  • Participate in staff meetings as directed by CRC Supervisor
  • Record donations of food given by the community
  • Perform other position-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation.

Education/Certifications:

  • Cook's papers, one (1) year course would be an asset.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification is required.
  • Culinary education and training is preferred
  • Completion of Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Skills/Capabilities:

  • Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people.
  • Good knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Possess a positive attitude with the ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and staff of The Salvation Army.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Valid Alberta Class "5" Driver's License, current copy of driver's abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Prevention Training and required Health and Safety training
