The Student Services department’s role in student success is to create a culture and environment that unleashes the full potential of all the students at SAIT. The Opportunity
Student Development and Counselling (SDC) is currently hiring students to be Outreach and Wellness Leaders (OWLs). You will participate in the delivery of positive mental health and wellness programs for students, through various campaigns and activities, providing a student perspective and voice.
As an OWL, you will have the opportunity to develop leadership, intercultural competency, communication, event planning, and organizational skills, while working in a diverse team. You will gain experience through training and professional development opportunities throughout the year. Additionally, you will enhance your understanding of positive mental health, holistic well-being, student success, and thriving at SAIT.
Successful applicants are expected to fulfill up to 5-hours per week before, between and after classes, including lunch hour if needed for events. This involvement includes training and professional development workshops held each semester, as well as content creation and bi-weekly meetings. Shift schedules vary based on events and will be determined as much in advance as possible and based on the students’ academic schedule as provided in Outlook calendar. The student is responsible for maintaining an accurate Outlook calendar.

The Role
Under the direction of the Student Outreach and Wellness Coordinator, contribute to the design, development, and delivery of mental health and wellness promotion programming for students.
Develop an understanding of the services offered at SAIT, and learn how to appropriately refer students to them.
Attend and participate in bi-weekly meetings with your supervisor and fellow OWLs.
Participate in campus-wide activities including Wellness Checks, orientations, and other booths at various events.
Attend and contribute as needed for on-line SDC workshops.
Engage in outreach at programs and events organized by SDC as required.
Promote positive mental health and well-being, holistic student success, and thriving at SAIT.
Provide student input to create and deliver mental health promotion initiatives and events for students, in collaboration with the Student Outreach and Wellness Coordinator and Post-Secondary Mental Health Grant Coordinator.
Participate in designing digital and print student mental health promotion materials for SDC and the 8 dimensions of wellness campaign.
Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities provided through the OWL and LEADS program.
Collaborate with various SAIT departments to deliver health promotion events.
Qualifications & Experience
MUST be a current SAIT student, attending classes in Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 semesters.
Must have completed at least one successful semester at SAIT, or previously attended a post-secondary institution.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with students and various parties effortlessly.
Demonstrated passion or experience in matters related to health, mental health, and wellness (no prior work experience in mental health field is required, training will be provided).
Ability to confidently discuss health and well-being topics and capable of referring individuals to appropriate resources when necessary.
Comfortable utilizing a wide range of online platforms (e.g., Teams, Zoom, etc.).
High intercultural competency, with the ability to be inclusive and respectful of cultural and other differences.
Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive matters.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
Proven problem-solving abilities.
Professional, with a strong work ethic.
Demonstrated ability to balance academics with extracurricular commitments, must be in good academic standing (verified via the Office of the Registrar)
Verified to be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct.
Availability:
Must have the ability to work during the day, in between and before and after classes. occasionally on weekends (particularly for training).
Must have the ability to work during exam-dense periods.
Must be available to work up to 5 hours per week.
