About the role

Position Title: Theatre Crew Area/Department: Recreation and Culture Services Reports to: Opera House Technical Lead/Theatre Operations Manager

Position Summary The Theatre Crew assists with the set up and tear down of productions and special events at the Gravenhurst Opera House and for events at Music on the Barge at Gull Lake Rotary Park. This includes cleaning, organizing, and maintaining the stage and backstage area. They also provide ushering assistance, as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assists theatre staff in set up and tear down for special events, meetings and functions
  2. Assists Technician with load-in and load-out duties.
  3. Assists in the set-up and breakdown of stage equipment.
  4. Assists in keeping accurate records of inventory and general maintenance.
  5. Assists with cleaning and organizing the stage and back stage and rental space for a safe working environment.
  6. Assists in keeping all supplies and equipment neat and orderly and in good working condition.
  7. Painting of props, sets and floor.
  8. Performs ushering duties, as required.

Education Skills & Experience

  1. Responsible, punctual and ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  3. Ability to follow instructions, both oral and written.
  4. WHMIS Certification is required for all new hires and must be presented at time of hire.
  5. Ability to work flexible hours with some holiday, nights and weekend work will be required.
  6. Must have sufficient physical strength and agility to lift, move and carry equipment and objects weighing up to a hundred (100) pounds and ability to climb ladders.
  7. Familiarity with theatre operations and experience in technical aspects of the theatre an asset.
  8. Valid G license with a clean drivers abstract satisfactory to the corporation (Use of own vehicle may be required).

Physical/Psychological Demands and Working Conditions  Environment: Work is conducted in a theatre environment with some exposure to criticism from the public. Requirement to juggle priorities, meet deadlines, verbally communicate to exchange information, deal with constant interruptions and changing demands during the course of a working day; while maintaining a pleasant, professional and positive demeanour. Physical: Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a theatre setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination.

Vulnerable Sector or Criminal Record Requirements: Please note that applicants must be prepared to provide a Police Record Check at their own expense before being employed by the Town of Gravenhurst.

Hours and Days of Work 0-20 hours/week, hours may vary depending on scheduled events that require theatre crew and are subject to change. Flexibility of hours will be required, including working evening, weekends and holidays.
