Overview

The Assistant Cook supports the Kitchen Supervisor in the preparation, cooking, and service of meals. This role helps ensure food is prepared safely, efficiently, and to a high standard while maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment. The Assistant Cook works collaboratively with kitchen staff and other team members to support daily kitchen operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing and cooking meals according to menus and dietary requirements
  • Support meal preparation for community programs, events, and gatherings
  • Ensure proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures are followed
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen work areas and equipment
  • Assist with inventory, stock rotation, and receiving supplies
  • Assist with serving meals as required
  • Follow all health, safety, and food safety regulations
  • Support kitchen operations in the absence of the Kitchen Supervisor as directed
  • Work collaboratively with kitchen staff and other departments
  • Assist with general kitchen support duties including dishwashing, cleaning, food preparation, and maintaining sanitation standards as required
  • Support Kitchen Prep Helpers and assist with overall kitchen operations during busy periods or staff shortages
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Ideal Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous kitchen or cooking experience preferred
  • Food Safe Certification or willingness to obtain
  • First Aid Certification considered an asset
  • Experience preparing meals for groups or community programs considered an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver?s License considered an asset
  • Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Knowledge of basic cooking techniques and kitchen equipment
  • Understanding of proper food handling and sanitation practices
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a kitchen environment
  • Exposure to heat, kitchen equipment, and cleaning chemicals
  • Standing for extended periods and lifting may be required
  • The regular schedule for this position is Monday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening, weekend, or flexible hours may be required to assist with cooking and food preparation for community events and programs.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate kitchen equipment and tools
  • Wage Range: $23.42-$25.55 / Hr

Pay: $23.42-$25.55 per hour
